So it looks like the only rational way that I am going to still be able to help pay for college AND get an AR is to build one. That way I don't have to throw all my money down at once. I'm probably going to do something like every semester buy two more things for the rifle. This semester I'm looking at the lower and stock. Anyone have some good places they go to buy AR parts?

Also, any suggestions on what NOT to do from past experiences?

Thanks in advance.

Thomas

I think shooters sells stripped AR lowers for $149. Couple guys here at work just bought them each one(or one did, and the other was thinking about it). Maybe they'll chime in, they're on here from time to time.

Would you recommend getting a complete lower and upper or stripped?

i didn't want to invest in the tools to build. and i don't really have a "hook-up" or friends with the tools. so i went complete upper/lower route.

Yeah same here. Probably what I will end up doing. I saw nice upper at Gun Gallery for near mid 600s.

I just got a couple of stripped lowers from R guns for $55 each (they are a close out they are having). Putting together a lower is dead simple. About the only tool you need is a pair of pliers, a hammer, and a punch.
I have never bought a completed lower, and I have 5 ARs as of right now. Now, I used to be an auto mechanic in a previous life, and I have always been very mechanically inclined--so easy for me may not be the same for you.
But if you can change your oil and do some simple things like that, without breaking or ruining stuff, you can probably put together a lower from a lower parts kit (about $55 for a DPMS from Midway USA).
You can all you need to know from right here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782
Look that over, and it should give you all you need to know to decide if you can do it yourself!
Putting together an upper is a bit more (and does require some special tools--a wrench), but it is not beyond most folks, though perhaps beyond the time needed to make it worthwhile.

You can get an additional $50 off of uppers from Spikes using these codes at checkout..

M4LEUP: for the carbine
MIDLEUP: for the mid-length
ARFCOM: for 5% off of purchases..

Best deal in my opinion going currently for the quality you get..Specs are on par with the Colt 6920..
